Inside the Usagiyama Shopping District, a unique and close-knit community of business owners thrives. Tamako Kitashirakawa, a cheerful and somewhat clumsy teenage girl, helps run her family’s traditional mochi shop, Tama-ya. One day, she encounters a peculiar talking bird named Dera Mochimazzi, who claims to be a royal messenger searching for a bride for his country’s prince. However, Dera quickly develops an obsession with mochi, eating so much that he becomes too heavy to fly home. As a result, he settles down with Tamako’s family and becomes a beloved member of the community. Meanwhile, Tamako’s childhood friend, Mochizou Ooji, struggles to confess his true feelings for her. Their fathers, lifelong mochi rivals, complicate matters—will their rivalry keep Tamako and Mochizou apart? And what will become of Dera’s royal mission?
